When he was young, musician and novelist Willy Vlautin feared he would become a drifter. He grew up in Reno, Nevada, in an era when the gambling town attracted a lot of those types — folks who’d show up alone, drink hard, gamble prolifically, then disappear without a word. He was afraid of them, but he was drawn to them, too.
