A Giant Dog’s house: America’s best local band comes to Denver
For The Denver Post
On a Wednesday in 2013, I drove 40 minutes to a dive bar in Austin called Hotel Vegas to see a band whose second album had me under its spell for weeks.
It was the beginning of summer, and the clouds were silver like iron fillings. I almost didn’t go. A huge storm was supposed to hit that night, so the prospect of traveling home at 2 in the morning in blinding rain gave me pause.
But I knew I had to see this band for myself. I’d heard friends talk about their shows the way fishermen talk about The Big Catch: voices hushed, eyes squinted in concentration.
